Building off of last week’s reflection on rhetoric, I think that this week was definitely filled with more than most. Between numerous job interviews and starting a site for my shop, I had to use a lot of persuasive rhetoric to talk myself and my work up. I think one of the most memorable parts was how my speech changed depending on which employer I was speaking to. With one I gave myself a more upbeat, laidback, and colorful personality while with another I tried to come off as professional and hardworking. I realized that I was actively choosing to reflect the atmosphere of their store in order to make myself a more appealing candidate.
Moving on to this week’s class, we began research on possible CQ subjects and brainstorming different plans and ideas. For me, I think the main part that I took out of class was getting acquainted with the UCI Library and all the resources it has to offer. While I’m still confused, it definitely helped guide me in the right direction. I think what I liked best about the library was how diverse all of the topics were; there were many articles building off of each other and providing different insights. I also really enjoyed discussing possible topics with my discussion group as well as listening to others present their ideas to the class.
While I am still unsure as to what my CQ topic will be, I am currently leaning towards writing something related to the Death With Dignity Act, or better known as assisted suicide. The idea of a doctor helping a patient to die seems completely backwards and is heavily debated in the medical field. This was a topic that I discussed very passionately back in high school and so while I already have an understanding of the different sides of the argument, I am excited to be able to do more research on it. The only drawback I have about this topic is how difficult it would be to find a specific demographic to focus my research on. I am vaguely exploring other topics incase this falls through, but I am keeping my hopes high.
